Effective Oct. 1, Dallas ISD implemented Provision 2 of the National Lunch and School Breakfast programs district wide, meaning all students will get breakfast and lunch free of charge.
“This is an incredible opportunity for the students of Dallas ISD,” says Dora Rivas, executive director of Food and Child Nutrition Services for the district. “We know that students who have nutritious meals each day perform better in school. It is impossible for students to do their best work if they are hungry. Through this provision everyone wins, especially our students.”
Dallas ISD has an enrollment of around 160,000 students and a free/reduced percentage of 89%. Last year it served some 190,000 meals a day and saw participation rates of 36% for breakfast and 74% for lunch.
