Michigan's state legislature is voting to tighten up eligibility standards for a food assistance program for low-income families and the unemployed that some say has been abused by college students, reports the Student Free Press. To date, the Bridge Card program qualified users with information about their household income and expenses, criteria that up to 20,000 college students in the state met even if they were from families that were well off.
Bridge Cards give users up to $200 a month in food allowances. Changes in the program expected to be approved by the legislature are designed to close the loopholes.
