NarrativeVBCPS saw a drop of about a half million meals in its school foodservice program last year, perhaps due to the impact of the new school meal regs, but still managed to stay “in the black” by about $600,000. This year, in the early going, the news has been more positive, with high school meals up about 7,000 (12,000 overall district-wide). Strategies to keep participation up include serving some school-meal-appropriate branded products such as Pizza Hut pizzas, offering better presentation, reducing the menu to a two-week cycle that emphasizes the most popular items and enhancing the dining experience in the cafeterias by, for example, removing traditional long tables in favor of more “commercial-like” seating options.
