NarrativeNYC operates about 1250 buildings with full kitchens and about 400 with partial kitchens; some buildings house more than one school and a few charter schools are served within district buildings. The department has made significant headway at standardizing menus while accommodating local preferences in a very diverse environment. Participation was down in 2012-13 because of Hurricane Sandy, but looks to recover this year. Most food is fresh-prepared, except for some bakery items and pre- cooked meats; salad bars are offered in almost all schools. Uniquely, the district has one all-vegetarian cafeteria at PS 244 in Queens. A la carte offerings have largely been phased out over the past few years. Barrett joined the district in mid 2013 Current plans call for upgrading professional development, formalizing responsibilities of the culinary staff and increasing accountability across the system. The district is part of the Urban School Food Alliance, an initiative of several large districts to establish common procurement standards for large volume items.
