The Houston ISD’s Food Services Department hosted its inaugural Community Health and Wellness Festival in late September at one of its high school sites. The event, free to the public, featured cooking demonstrations from HISD Food Services Chef Ryan Ng (pictured), celebrity chef Tiffany Derry (Bravo TV’s Top Chef All-Star) and culinary students from the Barbara Jordan High School for Careers.

The demos highlighted frugal healthy eating using inexpensive items found in local grocery stores, with plenty of sampling of the dishes.

“This health and wellness festival is just one of many ways that HISD Food Services strives to inspire families to live a healthy life,” says HISD Food Services Senior Manager Brian Giles.  “It is also a great opportunity to showcase what many of our students are already doing to encourage healthy lifestyles.”

There were also free health screenings and immunizations for children, as well as informational booths from more than 20 local health organizations.
