Following a three-year campaign and a petition drive that collected over 3,000 signatures, the Rutgers University dining program will no longer purchase eggs from hens raised in battery cage confinement systems, reports the New Brunswick Patch. The change in policy, which will take effect when students return to campus this fall, was smoothed with an extensive student survey initiative that found that almost all meal plan holders were in favor of the switch and would be willing to pay up to three times the extra amount actually needed to put the policy in place, according to Executive Dining Services Director Joe Charette. He noted that the cage-free eggs would be sourced from local farm co-op.
