South Elgin High’s all-morning breakfast cart is a regular visitor during study halls all morning.

South Elgin (IL) High School students can now grab breakfast during morning study halls from a cart program launched recently by the nutrition services department, reports the Bartlett Press. The pilot initiative, launched at the beginning of the school year, is funded by a $2,500 grant from the Midwest Dairy Council.

The cart, which offers fruit, cereal, breakfast bars, juice, milk, yogurt and string cheese, makes nine stops over the first four class periods of the day, giving students who did not have breakfast, or who have a late lunch (the last lunch period is not until 1:37) a way to get something nutritious to eat during the morning hours.

While South Elgin has always offered breakfast in its cafeteria, participation was low. The cart has boosted average morning meal counts by almost 200%, from 110 to 300. Prices for items range from 50 cents to $1.00.
