The National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) has named SNA Past President Katie Wilson, PhD, SNS, as its next executive director. “This is a dream come true for me,” says Wilson. “Here I can be at an executive level, have impact nationally and still be involved with child nutrition.” Dr. Wilson has directed school nutrition programs in three Wisconsin school districts and served as SNA president in 2008-09.
NFSMI is located at The University of Mississippi’s Oxford campus. It was established by Congress in 1989 and permanently authorized in 1994. NFSMI serves the nation’s school nutrition program, conducting research, providing information and offering educational programming through seminars, workshops, satellite presentations, teleconferences and its website, www.nfsmi.org.
“I’m so passionate about training; that’s what makes this a great fit," says Wilson. "I think it’s exciting that I come from the field of school nutrition and can bring a different perspective to the position."
According to Wilson, NFSMI and the University of Mississippi already are exploring some innovative changes together, such as the establishment of a graduate program. “We will be able to expose new graduates to school nutrition as a career,” she adds. “We’ll be working with the future of the school nutrition profession.” Wilson’s appointment is effective July 1, 2010.
