The Texas Department of Agriculture has docked a high school a day’s worth of state free/reduced lunch reimbursement—about $1,800 total—because a student was caught sharing a pizza brought in from outside, reports the local Fox 26 TV news station. A four-year-old state nutrition policy prohibits students from sharing meals brought in from off the premise, though they are permitted to consume it themselves. The student’s mother had brought in the pizza for her son, a student at Manvel High School in the Alvin ISD. The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy also prohibits fundraisers using food during the school day, birthday parties outside of the classroom and unhealthy in-class snacks.
