Slushie Machines in Schools Provoke Controversy

Slushie machines installed in middle and high schools in the Madison, WI, School District prompted parental protests recently, reports the Capital Times. The units vend 8-oz. frozen concoctions priced at a dollar. Parents protested what they considered a non-nutritious addition to the school menu but district FSD Frank Kelly notes that the machines use 100% juice with no added sugar. The units are part of an experimental addition to the a la carte offerings at two middle schools and three high schools.
