Salmon Boom For Alaska District

A program through which local fishermen donate sockeye salmon to students in the Southwest Region (AK) School District around Bristol Bay has ballooned in the past two years, reports the Anchorage Daily News. The donations reached 14,000 pounds in July, compared with 8,000 pounds in all of 2007, the first year of the program, which seeks to give area school children locally harvested fish to eat for lunch rather than seafood shipped from far away.
