Jersey District's "Rocket" Composter Takes Only 14 Days to Break Down Food Scraps

Chatham (NJ) Township unveiled a "Rocket Composter" device that it will use to divert food scraps from its school district kitchen and cafeterias and turn it into compost for use by school gardeners and landscapers in just 14 days, reports the Daily Record. The 180-gallon unit will be located at the high school, whose kitchen prepares meals for both that location and three elementary schools.

At least three other district schools are expected to send their cafeteria food wastes to the high school to be composted. Students will be asked to put their scraps into specially marked receptacles for collection.
