High School Plans to Grow Enough Tomatoes to Meet All Its Sauce Needs

Framingham (MA) High School is planning to fulfill all its tomato sauce needs—an estimated 1,400 gallons worth—for the coming school year with tomatoes grown in a half-football-field-sized plot on the school grounds, reports the Metrowest Daily News. The produce—mostly tomatoes but also other vegetables as well as herbs like oregano and basil for the tomato sauce—is expected to be planted near the end of this school year and harvested over the summer. Foodservice Director Brendan Ryan is spearheading the project and will oversee the field but hopes to eventually pass the task on to students.
