A former warehouse manager charges that the Marietta, GA, City School System is serving expired food to students, according to CBS Atlanta. Howard Clotfelter, who left the system because of disability, gave the CBS station investigators e-mails he says back up his claims. One seems to show the district foodservice director, Sandy Laffan, telling employees at one school to go ahead and use scrambled eggs five months past their expiration date, claiming they are safe because "they have been frozen."
When contacted by reporters, District Superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck said Marietta Schools follows USDA guidelines, which permit some frozen foods to be served even after the expiration date. The district has passed all its health department inspections, which reportedly include the checking of expiration dates.
