Colorado U. Plans to be Zero-Waste This Season

The University of Colorado plans to be "zero waste" during its home football games at Folsom Field this season. The events traditionally generate about 10 tons of trash sent to landfills each game.

The goal of the program, dubbed Ralphie’s Green Stampede (Ralphie is the name of the buffalo that is the football team’s mascot) will be to compost about 90 percent of that total, with the compost being used for landscaping around campus. Concessions manager Centerplate will use compostable disposables and student volunteers will staff some 50 recycling stations around the stadium during the games to help fans sort their waste.

CU says it is the first major college or pro sports program to attempt a zero-waste policy
