Extension agents from the University of Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service program are fanning out across the state's school districts to promote the use of locally grown fresh produce, reports KyForward.com. Some encourage the development of onsite school gardens, such as at Wayne County Schools, where agriculture students associated with the Future Farmers of America have been tilling a plot at the high school that raises cantaloupes, cucumbers, cabbage, broccoli, peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes and cauliflower for the district dining program.
Others have developed a Farm-to-School resource guide and helped personnel in the Kentucky Department of Public Health disseminate funding they received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for Farm to School programs across the state.
