A comprehensive local study of the Oakland USD's school meal program recommends a series of significant changes and upgrades, reports the East Bay Express. The study, Rethinking School Lunch in Oakland, was conducted by the district and the Center for Ecoliteracy. It reviewed 10 components of the meal program, from facilities and finances to procurement and waste management, and recommended a series of steps, including the construction of a central commissary, the creation of 17 from-scratch cooking kitchens, the designation of 14 "community kitchens open to use by outside groups and the creation of a 1.5 acre farm to grow produce for use in school meals.
