CT District Again Opts Out of State's School Food Certification Program

The Westport (CT) Board of Education has voted not to participate in the state's Healthy Food Certification program for food serviced outside the federal reimbursable meals program

For the third year in a row, the Westport (CT) Board of Education has voted not to participate in the state's Healthy Food Certification program for food serviced outside the federal reimbursable meals program, reports the Westport Patch. The district emphasizes that it complies with healthy food standards, the Connecticut Nutrition Standards imposed by the Healthy Food Certification program are too restrictive and costly to implement. Among other things, they require all condiments to be low-sugar and -sodium, reduce the amount of salt used in cooking, ban all caffeinated beverages and reduce portion sizes to levels that alienate many students.

I admire the school Board of Education for saying no to a Policy that only creates problems. Students donot get over weight from school food service, the meals often are the only source of nutritional sound meals they receive. When you speak of gym, to the state they say no, when the Food Industry could save many lives, by cutting down on salt, fat, and surgar everyones mouth is shut, My schools never put salt on their fries, the kids love them. The schools are stressing out with the new so call Healthy options that even the government cant agree on, Stop The Madness.
