What They're Eating in Malawi

What They're Eating in Malawi

And elsewhere for school lunch. It's all at a site called School Lunch Around the World (http://interestingemailforwards.blogspot.com/search/label/food). The examples from the U.S. run the gamut from an organic meal to retro Salisbury steak/mashed potatoes combo.

In Malawi (a country in Africa, in case you didn't know), white rice with beans and vegetables is on the lunchroom menu, and you gotta figure it is something American dietitians would kill to make the staple here.

Asian countries, as might be expected, are heavy on the rice, seafood and steamed veggies. In fact, one dish from Japan features sardines and an orange slice along with white rice and something unidentifiable in a bowl. Chances are, it would not go over too well if you were to taste-test it with your own customers…

Interestingly, both French meals shown include French fries. What's up with that? One of them includes a ground beef patty and what a commentator identifies as a puff pastry filled with bacon and cheese. Those, along with the slice of what looks like a chocolate brownie, plus the mound of fries, make the meal seem suspiciously American in its potential calorie content.

On the other hand the other French meal shown is unmistakable Gallic: a bowlful of cooked mussels and a whole artichoke, plus half a grapefruit, yogurt, roll and lemon tart/cheesecake slice (the post is unclear on what it is). What kid wouldn't want to see that on his lunch tray?
