Quote of the Month
“You're never going to satisfy
any
incarcerated individual.”
— Alabama Sheriffs Association head Bobby Timmons, commenting about inmates who bellyached about the skimpy meals served by Morgan County (AL) Sheriff Greg Bartlett. Bartlett apparently pocketed some $212,000 over the past three years from the state prisoner food allowance of $1.75 per prisoner per day. State law allows sheriffs to keep unused meal allowance money, and Bartlett is accused of starving his prisoners in order to minimize the amount spent on meals. Several prisoners claim they lost significant amounts of weight while in Bartlett's custody. Bartlett was himself jailed by a federal judge until he submitted a plan that would spend all the allocated funds on prisoner meals, holding none back for personal use.
