Manama, a restaurant in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, reportedly has imposed a “wastage fee” on diners who don’t clean their plates, reports Gulfnews.com. The reason: wasting food is against the principles of Islam, the country’s official religion.
Now, one would think that a wastage fee is already imposed when a customer pays for food he doesn’t eat, but apparently that’s not enough for Manama.
Just Desserts thinks this is a great idea for some onsite foodservice operators who have all-you-care-to-eat facilities where food waste is legendary. Forget about going trayless or putting up those hectoring signs about how much food goes into landfills.
Just post a tray inspector at the door and impose an extra swipe for every pound not eaten.
Of course, there may be an inflationary effect on the Freshman 15…
