YELLOW MUSTARD, the no-carb, no calorie condiment, has a flavorful history. Here's a few fun facts about one of America's favorite hot-dog toppers.
- Mild American-style mustard first turned heads at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis when served on a frankfurter sandwich (otherwise known as the Hot Dog.)
- Surprise! The U.S. may be the largest consumer of mustard but Canada is the largest mustard producer in the world.
- The sensation of heat from mustard comes from a volatile oil released when the crushed seed is mixed with water. Some nutritionists believe mustard and other heat-producing products, such as hot peppers, stimulate metabolism by as much as 40%.
- Bright yellow American-style mustard actually comes from a tan-colored mustard seed and its color and flavor are enhanced by added spices, including Indian spice and turmeric.
