UW to Renovate Husky Union
Tuition Hikes to pay for two-year, $82 million project.
The University of Washington will shut down its 61-year-old Husky Union for a two-year renovation this summer. The building, opened in 1949, includes the Husky Den, a nine-station food court, as well as offices for many campus groups, a bookstore, a bank, meeting spaces and a gaming area.
The cost of the $82 million project will be paid over 30 years through a $90 fee added to tuition costs each quarter beginning in 2012. Some of the Husky Den foodservice outlets, such as Subway, will move to other parts of the campus temporarily while the renovation takes place.
