| VEGGIE VOTING: As students exited the cafè, they were asked to place a ticket in the box representing the veggie they liked the most. |
Still trying to get youngsters to eat their veggies?
Jean Ronnei, director of nutrition services at St. Paul (MN) Public Schools, spurred students' competitive nature—and veggie intake—by launching the district's first ever Cool Veggie Contest Day.
The ballot consisted of jÌcama sticks, pickled beets, portabella mushrooms and red and green bell peppers.
"Elementary students were asked to try each of the vegetables with an open mind," says Ronnei. "As they left the cafè, they put their ticket in the box representing their favorite new veggie."
And the winner is...the jÌcama sticks.
"79% of the elementary schools voted for jÌcama sticks as the coolest veggie," says Ronnei. "The sticks will be added to the districts choice vegetable bar in the fall."
