Sara Lee Corp. says it is closing down operations at its Superior coffee roasting plant in Chicago

The company cited excess production capacity at its coffee plants nationwide and the costs that would be needed to upgrade the aging facility. The plant is expected to be closed on April 14. Sara Lee Foodservice operates five other coffee roasting plants nationwide. The company said it chose the Chicago plant because its age makes for extremely high maintenance costs. Needed upgrades, including a new roaster, would have required significant investment.
