NarrativeHouston ISD Food Services says it operates the largest central production and distribution facility of its kind in an urban school district, as well as the nation’s largest breakfast in the classroom (BIC) program, with more than 20 million meals served annually. The central facility includes an 80,000-sq.ft. storage/distribution center and 95,000 sq.ft. of food production space with a bakery, cook-chill and cold prep. Student consumption of fruits and vegetables shot up 63% last year for one of the nation’s most diverse districts (a quarter of residents are foreign-born), and two additional RDs were hired for community outreach and nutrition education services. Catering is a major endeavor with $350,000 in sales last year.
