NarrativeLee County, encompassing the Ft. Myers area on Florida’s southwest coast, saw stagnant population growth for a few years earlier this decade but has recently been growing again, adding about a thousand students to the district school’s enrollment annually. The Food & Nutrition Services department was not greatly impacted by the change in school meal regs in 2012 as it had pretty much already made the needed menu changes earlier. Food costs went up by about five cents a meal but were covered by increased reimbursements. A planned conversion to palm scanner-based POS in school lunchrooms was halted last spring due to parental concerns about privacy.
