NarrativeEconomically depressed Fresno’s school district—79 of the district’s 104 school sites offer universal free breakfasts and lunches due to high poverty levels—is challenged by tight budgets and an extremely diverse student body in which fully a quarter of students are in Learning English programs. A cost-saving plan to convert elementary school meals at 31 sites to prepackaged breakfasts and lunches prepared in the district’s centralized Nutrition Center kitchen recently ran into opposition from workers and their union; they claim the change violates current labor contract terms. Thirty-seven elementaries already get pre-made meals from the central kitchen, which currently prepares some 30,000 meals a day. Plans call for doubling that output. On a more positive note, the district recently landed a state grant to purchase fresh produce from local farmers.
