NarrativeTaylor took over direction of Nashville’s school nutrition operations last fall after heading the same program in Birmingham, AL, Schools for the past dozen years. He has spent the time not only overseeing and improving the program but making connections with parents and various community groups, with whom he meets monthly to get feedback and exchange ideas. Fresh produce purchases, which jumped more than 100% from $400,000 to over $1 million, posed a financial challenge in 2012-13, and participation also dropped slightly over the year. This year, Nashville is focusing on promoting more scratch recipes and getting more involved in farm-to-school programs. More than 40,000 students are direct certified for free school meals in a district that encompasses poorer urban communities and more affluent suburban ones.
