NarrativePrince William County, near Washington, DC, in Northern Virginia, is one of the highest income counties in the U.S., as well as a growing one. But the school district still has a substantial and growing number of children from low-income families, with the free/reduced percentage creeping up to around 38% this year from 36% in 2012-13. The school nutrition program also saw a deficit last year for the first time in many years, due largely to the increased costs associated with implementing the new federal school meal regs. The Food Service Department sponsors after school Chefs Clubs in their middle schools to teach culinary skills and nutrition, something reinforced with a division wide year-end competition.
