NarrativeBaltimore saw a participation bump last year, increased its fruit/vegetable consumption and pushed hard for more salad bars in its schools. This fall, over half of the schools have salad bars. To keep students interested, the salad bars feature a weekly rotation of four theme salads. This year they also offer fresh whole seasonal fruits, from local sources as much as possible. Another focus is a breakfast-after-the-bell program. The high-poverty district sees about three quarters of its students directly certified for subsidized school meals while breakfast is free for all students under the Provision 2 option.
