NarrativeFulton County Schools System saw a small participation percentage decrease last year at lunch due possibly to the impact of the new meal regs on menus, but the district has been busy rebuilding participation with educational programs focusing on local produce and a partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to promote healthy lifestyle messages to students. The district promotes local produce by highlighting a different local farmer each month in its cafeteria. Aggressive taste testing of recipes allowed the district to identify menu choices most likely to appeal to students. Fulton County also brought in a pair of local chefs over the summer to provide professional development to school nutrition managers on effective food presentation techniques.
