NarrativeDeKalb, the Atlanta area’s third largest county after Gwinnett and Cobb, is piloting community eligibility option (CEO) certification at nine of its schools to provide universal free meals for those students. The growing district also has a strong farm-to-school program that is being integrated into its wellness program and which operates gardens at seven sites and a greenhouse operation at the district agricultural high school that composts kitchen scraps. Total local produce purchases last year were almost $120,000. The wellness program encourages staff to live more healthful lives and is promoted by having schools compete with each other for best performance in a series of healthy living metrics. A partnership with Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta reinforces the healthy menu message with kids-friendly activities like pep rallies.
