NarrativeServing a portion of the San Antonio metro area, Northside is a fast-growing district with a strong lunch participation despite open high school campuses. The cafeterias use aggressive branding centered around the N-Zone Café name that imitates the commercial food court model so popular with teens. Younger students are approached using the department’s self-developed “Northside NIC” (Nutrition Instruction Chimp) mascot, who visits schools all year for cafeteria “meet-and-greets” that include presentations on nutrition. Last year, NIC appeared before some 12,000 students and has been so successful that a second NIC is being rolled out this year to allow even more appearance. Quality of ingredients is a priority in the dishes served to retain customers in the district cafeterias, along with plenty of choice: three daily entrees on a two-week cycle in the elementaries and four daily entrees in middle and high schools.
