NarrativeCobb County lies northwest of Atlanta and includes the city of Marietta. The district has been emphasizing locally grown products, highlighting the farms and farmers who grew the featured items in the school cafeterias. Meal production is site-based and offers a mix of scratch and heat-and-serve selections. A la carte is a significant part of the program, with sales in excess of $8.5 million last year. School gardens are a growing initiative with 46 so far, and the district hosted a conference on the subject in mid-October in conjunction with the Captain Planet Foundation that drew over 150, including representatives from other area school systems. Another initiative is a mobile cooking cart program used for live demos and education sessions given by both district staff and outside experts secured in partnership with the Georgia Restaurant Association. The cart can be rolled into classrooms and used at school events to highlight how local in-season products can be used in recipes.
