NarrativeSan Diego USD is converting its afterschool snack program to full suppers with bistro boxes and deli sandwiches. A kiosk cart program, Sandi Coast Cafe?, has boosted high school participation to around 68%. Branding is also a big factor in the cafeterias, as are salad bars: there are over 700 in 255 schools, with around 10% of the produce coming from local farmers. SDUSD recently launched a Meatless Monday in its elementaries. Breakfast in the classroom has been around for eight years, including in all the system’s Provision 2 sites.
